Kid Zone

Welcome to my life. I still have moments where I can't believe this is my life now. I have enjoyed having these little companions. They are pretty good at going on long walks. First, we went to The Eccles Community Art Center, where I have a piece in their "Black and White" show.

We also stopped at "Topper Bakery." The name made me nostalgic for our old appaloosa, Topper. Unfortunately, the baked goods were anything but GOOD.

The troops tired on the return trip, so I found this cart and in true Ogden style wheeled the walkers home.

Stopping for swings. I hope this doesn't make me an evil stepmother, but I was wonderfully surprised at how well those "baby swings" contain them and keep them from being able to run away from me. :) I'm looking forward to Spring for more outside play time.
p.s. How did I do on my very first "Mommy Blog" post? I've been reading them for years, wondering how it feels to post about play groups, outings, and human growth and development milestones. :)

Ogden Town

We've been married two weeks now. It's been a whirlwind of activity! My life is changing changing changing in a major way. Here are some pictures of the changes. Pictured above is our house.
Change no. One: I live with a man in an old shabby house (needs more "chic", as my Mom would say).

Change no. Two: I am a dog owner. This is Bender. While he is not a pit-bull, he is related to that breed. Thankfully, he is not aggressive towards women. It was difficult for me to allow Geoff to put a kennel in the back of my pristine Rav4 to take Bender to the vet (never had pet germs in it before), but that is what happens when you marry into pet-ownership.

Change no. Three: I am an instant mother. I have two little munchkins that show up one day a week and every other weekend. We had Geoffrey's son, and his son's sister this weekend. They enjoyed playing on ratty couch we pulled out of our house and onto the curb. We also enjoyed a little family hike out in the sunshine and through the snow that led to a shady stone wall.

Lastly, I think this picture illustrates well some of the new and exciting changes in my life: breakfast dishes of more than just me, someone who lets me put my feet on them, and a little boy wearing nothing but briefs. Let us remember what Benjamin Franklin says, "When you're finished changing, you're finished."

Geoffrey King and I decided to follow our hearts and marry each other on the very last day of the year! We were married at 10:30am in Liberty Park, Salt Lake City Utah on a cold and blustery day. The Rev. Sharon Vollett officiated at the ceremony. Geoffrey's son, Asher came, as well as Geoffrey's mother, grandmother, and Asher's six-year-old sister, Annika.

Princess Religion Workshop

We had a blast at the PRINCESS RELIGION WORKSHOP. Ten wonderful children showed up and we made collage princesses, using some materials that inspire me: antique portraits, kittens, Mr. Sketch markers, and lace. I loved having Emily Melander be my co-teacher with me, we are an unstoppable art team duo, we had a lot of fun talking to the kids about their creations:
"What are you going to name your princess?"
"Cinderella"
"Well, the goal is to come up with YOUR OWN princess, one that doesn't exist."
"So, what are you going to name your princess?"
"Cinderella."

Oh dear. Those Disney Princesses are hard to shake.

Saturday, Dodge and I went to the Salt Flats. Dodge and I have been friends for 11 years now, the flats have been around even longer...salt is a great preservative of friendship I guess.

Erin and I went to a Halloween dance this weekend. Erin was a doll. I was myself. I wore the same black sequin shirt I wore last year. I was dressing with the intent to dance. Today my neck is sore, it's as if I have whip-lash, that's how hard core I was dancing.

Angry Day

I think there was an emotional hail storm that came through my body last night while I slept. It left my mood a brown stinking cesspool. I was angry all day long. The day began with some weird dreams involving our old home at 8106 Livingston, horses that nobody would let me ride, and people that I was looking for and couldn't find. Finally, after several terse interactions with people, and after the days work, I went for a walk in the evening. The walking combined with heavy breathing of fresh air as I climbed the side-walked hills of the Avenues, plus talking to calm Lauren on the phone eventually tempered the mood and finally quelled the 9 hours of bad moods I been weathering. I'm glad I survived. In the final blocks of my walk home, after the sun had set, I found some peace chanting these words aloud: "I don't know everything. I can't do everything by myself." While the words are not profound, they helped bring some clarity. Am I sounding crazy yet, or just like my Mom? :)

I took this picture on a really cold and rainy day here in UTAR, it represents my sad bleak outlook on the winter on a bad day, and on a good day it shows how fun it is to layer up and wear knitted hats indoors because your apartment is really that cold. I haven't posted in a while because I didn't have anything to post about, but here is an update- and you can decide if it was worth posting:

I have been getting used to my new job at this place. That means I am learning to repeat myself A LOT. I go around to elementary schools and other public venues with a traveling exhibit that resides in the back of a huge truck (I am also the driver of the truck. Today I totally rocked backing out of a parking lot and then parallel parking my truck in it's parking spot. I am adding a new skill to my repertoire: truck driving. Let me know if you need me to drive something for you.) I give a 20 minute presentation to school classes and take the kids through the exhibit, then I do it again 15 more times in the day. And then I wake up the next day, go to a new school, and give the presentations again all over. But don't be fooled: I love my job.

This next picture shows another adjustment: I'm dating a black hole. Just kidding, I'm not dating anyone. Not anymore. I keep wondering if we humans are cut-out for this kind of brutality. Are we designed to keep giving our hearts out to almost-strangers, over and over again, not knowing if we will get it back in the same condition it was given? (What about leaving something better than when you found it?!) I think my heart is going to give out, and be unable to sustain the energy necessary to begin more relationships, which past experience has proven to ALWAYS end in a Challenger-Space- mission-like explosion. But like Celine says, "near, far, wher-eever you are...my heart will go on and on." It wouldn't be right if I didn't acknowledge my wonderful family and friends right now, because they keep answering the phone. Even when they see it's a call from me... and I'm probably going to express some sort of sadness, and a wistful thinking comment about the break-up. And then I'm going to call them again the next day with the same sort of comment. Love you all, thanks for listening to me. Every day. All day.

Anyways, moving on: I'm also moving to a new studio space, that means I won't have to use my bedroom as an art studio anymore! I'm also preparing for an upcoming show in December at the public library in Salt Lake, it's called "Princess Religion." Things are cracka lackin! More art to come! Thanks for reading!

Carnival

The Summer magic here in Utah just diminished slightly with the passing through of the Carnival. I dropped Geoffrey off in Brigham City this weekend so that he could drive a carnival semi down to AZ. We pulled into Brigham late Saturday night, the Peach Days Festival was still in full sway with the Ferris wheel rotating and the "Death Drop" eliciting adolescent screams, by Sunday morning the streets were empty. Candy wrappers circulated in the wind and all the port-a-potty latches indicated "vacant"- only their tanks holding evidence of the crowd that once gathered. G was assigned to cart away the race truck, unhinged and separated into pieces like a giant Brio train track set.

Disney Princesses

I'm preparing for an installation at the Salt Lake Public Library branch in the Avenues. I've been thinking about the Disney Princess religion/school of psychology. I don't know what to call it, but just the fact that I can get Disney Princess toothpaste, bed sheets, fruit snacks, and socks, and multiplication flash cards seems a little obsessive and commercially lucrative (Maybe I can actually SELL these paintings). In taking the facebook app quiz, "Which Disney Princess are you?" Guess which one I am...Is it Aurora? Snow White?....It's BELLE!

This week a friend and mother from my elementary school had an art camp at her house, for two hours each day for four days. She arranged it all for seven kids and I just showed up with some art supplies and know-how. We took turns leading activities with the kids. We had a lot of fun printing off of craft foam, doing watercolors, side-walk chalking, and cookie decorating. Look at these cute prints!

So I finished this painting a while ago and was never really satisfied. Here she is now:

I pasted two photographs of my eyes over hers, and now I like it a lot better. It is a self portrait now. It is myself as a doll, but an intelligent and feeling one, with human eyes. On the bottom of the image are horses and a cherry pie. Next to the pie are the words, "Yes, I can bake a cherry pie."

I was thinking about the song lyrics "can she bake a cherry pie, billy boy, billy boy." The song indicates that in order for a girl to be married she has to have kitchen skills, specifically cherry pie baking skills. That seems to be kind of a surface skill in my opinion, a non-essential to a happy marriage, but in answer to the question, I say "Yes. Yes, I can bake a cherry pie, so I guess I'm ready." :) But instead of being a dumb plastic doll, I want to be an intelligent one. I don't want to be limited by my molded body, with joints that only go one direction, eyes that roll back in the head, and silent pursed lips...I don't want to make pies all day...just some thoughts about dolls...

More Santa Fe Fire Camp

This is my co-worker, Chris. He was a sandwich making champ. We made about 800 sandwiches every day.

I went to the Georgia O' Keefe museum. I was admitted for free because of my affiliation with the fire, pretty nice!

The pond where we all camped, my home sweet home for two weeks.

This is how we make 800 lunches each day in an assembly line. What is in the lunches you may wonder: Things your mother would never let you have as a kid. 3 kinds of candy, 2 kinds of cookies, a sandwich, roughly one piece of fruit.

I am so so glad to be back in Salt Lake now.

Oh my goodness. I have just had one of the craziest weeks of my life. I took a summer job working for a catering company that feeds wildfire fighters. It was intense: hot dry weather, lots of cooking, long drive to southern Colorado, working 12 hour days, etc. Glad to be back...at least until we're called on another fire...stay tuned!

"James and Darryl"

I followed my Mom's directions for delicious whole wheat bread, and it did not turn out light and airy like hers. My kitchenaid refused to cooperate in kneading this bread, grunting and groaning before shorting out, the dough too dense and thick. Here are the two "normal" looking brother loaves (James and Darryl, if they had names), below is the weird Quasimodo-like brother of the family (Cedric). He could be used as a weapon in like manner to how Mario uses a turtle shell. This loaf also reminded me of the part in About a Boy, when Marcus is feeding ducks from a hearty homemade loaf his depressed and fuzzy- sweater-wearing-mom made, he is shown trying to rip off bite size pieces, when in frustration he throws the whole loaf into the pond, hitting the nearest duck and taking it's life.

Sarah touts a lot of the brains and talent in the family. I always thought she was going to be an architect, design interior spaces, run some kind of business (catering?), but she spends her time designing little Travis's and a Lucy, as well as running a daily catering service to her family. When I see the pictures on her blog of the delicious food she's made and her little ones are eating it, I always think, "She's serving that to a three year old?!! They can't possibly appreciate that fine cuisine!!" Sarah always gives her best, no matter what.

A Mother Heart, and other Inclusive ways of talking about Mother's Day

Erin just got home from church and was telling me about one of her friends who is in a pity party for herself after having just turned 31 and getting the boot out of the single's ward. Combine that with Mother's Day and you have a single sister wreck on your hands. So, I am not going to be a single sister train-wreck, even though I ate my dinner meal alone, listening to John Rutter Christmas music and watching the rain fall in sad drizzly drips, like the tears dripping out of my heart of the sadness of being 28 and not having any little sippy cups to fill up, creamed carrots to wipe off the floor, and boogers to suck out of a nose with that plastic siphon-thing. :) In honor of Mother's Day and in celebration of womanhood I made a delicious dinner for myself-one that Mossie, Ruth Beaver, Gramma Bruneel, and Deb Fox would be proud of. Later when Erin came home, while pushing a forkful of chicken and green beans to her mouth she said, "I think the spirit of Ruth Beaver has been with us."

My Bishop reminded us all today that some people won't have the opportunity for marriage, "Thanks, I've never heard that before, thanks for pointing that out. I appreciate the reminder." Ha Ha. :) I'm convinced that the desire for marriage and family isn't any different than any other unfulfilled desire: many people want to find someone so they're not lonely anymore and it doesn't happen, or it does and then they want children and they can't have any, or their kids have health problems, or they lose their job and all their money...and on and on...nobody ever gets what they want when they think they should get it, and nobody's life goes exactly as planned...

...Anways, I'm grateful for what my life is now, and it wouldn't be so great if I didn't have my Mom (or Dad). Happy Mother's Day to everyone, single, widowed, or married-alike!

My herb garden (btw) is fantastic. It consists of 3 plants: rosemary, cilantro, and italian parsley. Sometimes I parse Italian to the parsley to help it grow better, I think it works.

I was making this delicious soup recipe and it exploded out of the blender, but thankfully nobody got burned, just a few linens soiled, walls splatted, but nothing serious. I love love love tomato soup, this was my first time making it. I will be doing this again, minus the mess.

Yes, for my Dad's birthday I bought him an Oscar Meyer Weinermobile. I knew he'd been wanting one for a long time. With my high paying job, I could finally afford to buy him one. To my Dad: Thanks for all your generosity, love, and counsel through the years. I love all the adventures we've had together, and hope for many more. You're so fearless, generous, kind and brave. It was so fun having my parents, Andrew and Melanie in town for the weekend. We enjoyed Music and the Spoken Word, eating out, shopping, and seeing the sights of SLC. How could you not wish this woman bounteous birthday wishes? She was such a star sister in my "formidable" teenage years and through the years she has only shined brighter and brighter. Erin and I are constantly talking about all the nice things we have from Whitney: cute cards throughout our house, an adorable niece and 2 nephews, good recipes, polyester shirts, SASS shoes (that would be Erin), figurines and trinkets, cute cupcake liners, not to mention all the good conversations and gems of wisdom we've heard throughout our lives having Whitney at the helm of the family.

Just today I was walking down the halls of my school, eating a cookie that the PTA gave me, and remembering the time Whitney and I decorated the door of Ivy's classroom teacher, Whitney is such a creative cat, and uses her talents so freely to help lighten the load of everyone in her path with all the pleasant and aesthetic elements she brings.

Evening Thoughts

Listening to Pandora right now (Avett Brother's station), it's a rainy, gray and very overcast Wednesday evening. I should not have ordered Girl Scout cookies from a cute little first grader at my school. I have already eaten about ten today, how can something so small and delicious be so bad? I think they should change the product and packaging of Girl Scout Cookies. It should just be Girl Scout Cookie. singular. One big huge Samoa cookie would be a better, more honest serving. They are not the kind of cookies people share anyways, they are hidden in the cupboard with the pots and pans. Eating many cookies is probably not much worse than eating a piece of cheese cake, or a donut, but the fact that I ate about ten makes me feel like a warthog, if I had eaten just ONE rather large cookie I would have gotten it over with quickly. Adding to this "pumba" feeling, I went to Turbo-Kick class tonight at the gym. Before class I felt sleek and healthy, pearly white skin, ruddy cheeks, cute curly hair. Why does the jumping, punching and kicking, which over time as I get more exhausted in the class lead to the plain old jiggling of my body fat, make me feel worse in the end?

Anyways, I'm fighting a head cold, daylight savings time, and discouragement. Tomorrow is another day: Hakuna Matata... means no worries for the rest of your days...it's not so bad being a warthog I guess. There are worse things.

Fascinating Helen Update

We just came back from Los Angeles. While there we interviewed Dr. Dean Berry, Helen's brother, and last surviving immediate family member, we also interviewed Gilly, an FW teacher, and Irwin Zucker, Helen's publicity manager. Dean and Irwin are in their eighties. The interviews went well and as always, we learned more about the story of Helen and Fascinating Womanhood. We are now ready to begin the tedious editing process...also, maybe a trip to Japan. There are FW followers in Japan! JAPAN!

I'm home alone, editing video and waiting for things to "render." I don't have much to say other than Happy Birthday to my dear brother Andrew (yesterday)! He brings music, muscles, and humor to our family. I like watching him play soccer and play with the nieces and nephews. He constantly teaches us new dance moves and also, he's a good example of humility and making the most out of difficult situations.

I don't have much of an update, still working at the school, constantly looking for a new job, wondering how it will all turn out...at least I live with Erin which means I won't starve, also, she is a great roommate who listens to me, and tolerates my grouchiness and displeasure at farts, and dirty dishes, and farts that escape while you wash dishes, and farts that trail you when entering cars. She also got me through my last relationship, which I just broke up a couple days ago...even if you're the one doing the breaking, it's still unpleasant...but BETTER in the end.

baby steps...me and Bob Wiley are going to get through this month...good things are ahead even when doors slam in your face (didn't get the job, the boy, the record deal, the porcelain doll for Christmas, or the right hair cut- right Mom?)

Tales from the Schoolyard

Working at an elementary school has been an interesting experience for me. I haven't blogged much lately, because I am so exhausted and worn out after work each day. Here are some of my daily happenings:

Bloody noses abound on the playground. I have twice now, accompanied small crying girls, with blood dripping out the cracks of their fingers, back into the school where I tell them they are going to be ok. I pretend like I know exactly what to do and I try not to let on that I'm completely grossed out with the red trail of drops on the asphalt and the nasty spittle that would come out of anyone's mouth when they are completely bawling. The time when Hermana Dunlop and I were driving in Van Nuys and all of a sudden her nose started spurting blood while at the wheel in heavy traffic was nothing compared to what I've seen now, nor have the solutions been so easy as with Hna. Dunlop, when I dove into my scripture bag only to find a maxi pad, which she promptly pressed to her nose, while continuing to press the gas pedal and we made our appointment in time.

I have also dealt with vomit. One day while riding the bus home with the kids, a 6th grade boy became ill and threw up. It splatted on the seat in front of him and chunked it's way down to the floor. I was in the middle of texting someone when I heard the kids call, "Miss Fox, Eduardo threw up!" I rushed up to the front and about gagged. I'd like to say that I was completely compassionate and selfless, but my insides actually boiled up inside and I was filled with rage. I kept the rage at bay, throwing paper towels in the boy's direction, donning plastic gloves that came in the bus's body fluids clean-up kit and opening little packets of sani-wipes. I was mad at the bus driver, Owen, who dumbfoundedly watched me console the sick student, wipe chunky puke off his arms and jacket, and at the same directed the other kids towards the back of the bus. For the second time in my life as a teacher aide, I told all the kids to "Shut up" while I cleaned up the mess.

Some of the perks of my job have been being able to drink out of tiny paper milk cartons, access to the teacher's lounge (today I helped myself to some chocolate cake in there), quiet moments in my head while on recess duty in the beautiful outdoors, and delicious cafeteria food- in it's processed and mass produced glory, which includes mac and cheese that rivals a DQ milkshake in it's adherence to the tray when held upside down.

I like my job: I get kids in trouble and they cry, watch a lot of movies, read books about animals (did you know that the strongest muscle is the jaw?), write kids up for misbehaving, read stories out loud, lead art projects and teach math groups. I usually do ok, but the other day, while writing some equations on the board a student asked, "Miss Fox, could you teach the math right today?" The previous day I couldn't remember how to multiply double digits together, but I figured it out after a trial and error series, yet I don't blame her for asking.

I know it's not a competition, but after seeing Whitney and Sarah's blogs about Christmas crafts, I thought I'd share what I've been cooking up in my bedroom/ studio. I made these for an ornament exchange party with other artists, including many of my BYU professors. I felt immense pressure to make a piece of ART, something witty, aesthetic and quirky, but in the end I just got crafty. The exchange party took place yesterday and the best part about it was leaving with a box full of handmade ornaments from other artists.

I play with dolls to escape the reality that I am growing up. I know- I am 28-years-old and should already be grown-up, but I still call my mom crying and fight with my sister like we are in grade school.

I'm learning about working full time, living on less, and being a role model for children. My job as a special-ed teacher aide challenges me: I teach math to third graders (finally am learning my times tables!), the alphabet song to a first grader, and the other day I found myself lecturing on forgiveness to my fifth graders after we watched a movie where a boy in an ice skating race pulled his opponent out of a frozen lake. I asked the kids what they would do if one of their enemies needed their help: "I would jump in the water with him, then push him down as I pulled myself out," "I would take his head and dunk him in and out of the water, over and over," "I would leave him there." You might have found yourself teaching forgiveness too if you were in my situation. For the most part, life is good. I'm glad I'm not 10 years old and that I don't have to ask permission to go to the bathroom.

Erin and I travelled to Pierce City, Missouri last weekend to film and interview the family of Helen Andelin, author of Fascinating Womanhood. Along with interviewing her son, Brian, we also interviewed the town mortician, Helen's trainer at the YMCA, as well as her banker. Here we are in her house (she passed away last year), interviewing her son Brian.

I have a few pieces on exhibit right now as part of the BYU Visual Arts Faith in Works Committee exhibit, Nature and Nurture: Narratives of the Family. As part of the exhibit opening the I participated in a panel discussion in for all the 100 or so visual arts students. I was wedged in between Lee Udall Bennion and Justin Hackworth, with Brian Kershisnik, Chris Thornock, Madison Smith, Lisa Jackson, and Janis Wunderlich at the panel table. It was a historic moment for me, as I was chewing the fat with such successful and amazing LDS artists. It was really fun to be involved in the exhibit and it makes me want to crank some more art out.

This last picture shows an exciting moment as FINALLY I was able to move to an apartment. I transported all my boxes out of storage, unpacked all my things, and made a huge mess. It was like seeing my long lost friends: pottery from my talented ceramist friends, vintage books, a box labeled "costumes," my kitchen knives, flowery vinyl swim caps, my polka dot cotton sheets. It has been a long summer for me, feeling like a transient. Other people would probably not think it was a big deal to share a bed with your sister in Idaho, sleep in a stuffy cement house in Bolivia, or sleep on a brown couch in Utah that is beginning to sag in the middle with the contours of your bum, but after a while, it really started to wear on me. Hooray for new beginnings!

Fascinating Womanhood, the documentary

Tonight Erin and I interviewed our neighbor Karen, about the book Fascinating Womanhood, which she read in the 70's. Karen is a wonderful, kind, and an extremely faith filled woman. She prepared us a magnificent dinner, allowed us to interview her, and then to top it all off, she even went swimming with us afterwards. She sent us home with a plate of freshly baked pumpkin muffins, words of encouragement, and a camera reel of excellent interview footage.

I love having a project to work on. Projects fuel me. I realize why I am such a lame grouch lately: I haven't been able to do projects. I think things are about to change for the better!

I rode out to Saltair today. Not being a local, I'd never heard of this place before. It opened up in 1893 funded jointly by the church and the Salt Lake and Los Angeles Railroad companies: "Saltair was a family place, intended to provide a safe and wholesome atmosphere with the open supervision of Church leaders. While some of the other resorts in the area were seen as "spiritually bleak," a young courting Mormon couple could visit Saltair without worrying about gossip. Train schedules from Saltair to stations near home were well known, and so long as the boy got the girl home at a reasonable time after the train arrived, parents weren't worried – in part because, from the moment of arriving at the station before the outing until they left the station coming home, they were usually never out of sight of trusted members of the community. More than once, a couple on the way home found themselves in the same car as their parents, who themselves had been dancing at Saltair." (wikipedia)

An interesting bit of history I thought. The building burnt down in 1925 and now there is another version that that is used as a concert venue. The new building was kind of tacky looking and I didn't feel like photographing it, so I didn't. But here is the lake, an old railroad car, and a nice glimpse of me in spandex.

Hello all,
At least I am not dying. Each time I go to update my blog, I think "blah." Were I to write something in that state it would be called "blahgging." I am living in Salt Lake still. I work at an elementary school as a teacher aide and I am worn out at the end of each day, that is my update.

Other updates, I am getting older. The sun is setting earlier and earlier. It is still blazing hot in Utah.

Good news: Erin and her roommates are very generous and let me stay at their apartment. The teachers and students I work with are very kind. The public library here is rad. My family is great. God is good.

I went to Muse Music in Provo this weekend. I watched my "guitar teacher" Josh (he is tuning his guitar, kneeling) perform with his band, "Until Further Notice." I think I'm supposed to make a pun about the band's name at this point, but it's too late at night to think that hard. The music was really loud and what I call "guy" music: killer guitar parts, lots of "ooohhhs" and harmonized choruses. Punchy drums. They played very well together and had a lot of energy. Muse Music has a special hold on me, Schmaltzy and Stars of Leo played there multiple times...good memories.

Central Utah Art Center Exhibit

Friday, August 13th was the opening reception for "ACTION: A Survey of Performative Works by Contemporary Utah Artists" in Ephraim, Utah. It was curated by Adam Bateman and Jason Metcalf. I was honored to be invited to participate in the show, I never really considered myself a performance or a Utah artist before, but I guess it fits. I worked on this box in Boise involving my dad in an elaborate wiring system and having my mom help me with the viewing bench. Inside the box my some of my videos were projected on a miniature movie screen, complete with popcorn-consuming-dolls as the viewing audience. Thanks to my dad, mom, and Whitney for providing me with props, as well as all my other Boise family members for giving me input about the project.

The reception was really fun, I got to reconnect with many of my BYU art friends, as well as see their fine works. The local news channel with the director of the CUAC, Jared Latimer, interviewed me about my piece for the evening news. Also, my mom, Erin, Lauren, Ruby and Galen came down for the festivities. Highway One

So last week was spent with Julie, Lissa, and myself riding down Highway 101 in Oregon, beginning in Astoria and terminating in Newport. People would ask about our trip and how we know each other, I didn't realize what a sweet story we had: "We are old college friends and now live all over, but we came together to do this ride on the 101." People were touched. An even sweeter bond is that we are all art teachers and we have all lived in the same blue house in Bellingham.

Lastly, I got home from Oregon in time to celebrate my birthday with my family. I actually made the cake because after a week of no cooking or creating anything I really felt like baking a cake. It was delicious and I got to put my Bolivian quincinera girl on top of it. The best part about my birthday this year was the nieces and nephews: they blew out all my candles, opened the presents for me, and swarmed me with attention and affection. Everything really is more exciting with little ninos around. I love how excited they get about birthdays, even for their ancient 28-year-old aunties.

Blogs are a chance to create whatever version of yourself you want (the above photo portrays me in my summer attire and life on Martha's Vineyard where I'm about to drink a glass of freshly squozen lemonade, pick wild blackberries and build sandcastles on the beach with 2 gorgeous Labradors running in the waves). Blogs allow you to brand yourself; it's like making your own magazine, TV show, or line of designer furniture. Thus far I try to make myself look interesting, cool, smart and pretty, also that I do brave things. But really, we all know that I'm grouchy in the mornings, my hair is graying, I am not as slim as the pictures portray taken with a "high eye level" and at a close focus (it just shaves the edge of your body right off the picture plane) and Lissa knows I'm always the last in the water. Perhaps this goes without saying, that blogs are a chance to create an alternate version of your life.

An update from the more true to life version of myself: I am still searching for a job, I have 2 friends that live in Boise which are both out of town right now (aside from family), I have acne sometimes, and I spend a lot of time internally conflicted, yet I am receiving mountains of blessings and goodwill continually showers down on me. Side note (a plea for attention, from you- the reader): someone today at church asked if I had been riding on a motorcycle last week, I felt cool saying "yes, it was me you saw."

My summer loves include getting ready for church with Lauren, a new dress, and this new delicious pumpkin bar I discovered. The icing has browned butter in it, which makes it extra delicious. Here is the original recipe, although I omitted the dried cranberries, doubled the vanilla, and used 1 c. whole wheat flour and 1/2c. white flour. Also, I added the pecans on top (staying true to my Southern heritage).

Also, I got a sunburn, and that is not part of the "summer loves" list.

I am too instant gratification oriented to really enjoy quilting. I started this ordeal before I left for Bolivia, gruelingly piecing little strips of cotton that came out of a scrap bag from Whitney and cursing the craft. Whitney and I looked at Gee's Bend quilts for ideas, but in the end my quilt just came out the way it wanted to be: no set symmetrical pattern, not exactly square, and machine quilted. A younger, more purist version of myself, circa 1996 when I sewed a dress a week- resulting in a closet full of floral printed cotton dresses- would have insisted on hand quilting, but I wanted to get this baby birthed. I think this quilt will serve as a reminder of this transition time in my life, and if I don't ever find a job and become a thriving professional, I will be the most crafty and cozy looking bum down on Main Street and 9th.

Season of the rhodies, rhodendrons, that is!

It felt so good to be back to my west coast roots this week, "unfettered and alive" as the Indigo Girls sing. Lissa picked me up Monday night in Seattle from the airport and drove us up the coast to our beloved Bellingham. We were lucky for a week of sunshine and that fresh aromatic sea air.

Highlights included:

visiting all my favorite eats, walking around downtown, biking to Boulevard Park, visiting the Institute and it's staples: Brother Nelson and Sister Dickey, handing out bread at the food bank one afternoon, visiting long lost friends (see pictures below), stopping in at the Three Trees Coffeehouse where Lauren got her first gig, talking current events with Eric and Lissa in the evenings, meeting with Terry of SWAN about my trip to Bolivia this summer, and spending the last day with Campbell in Seattle. It was superb! Thanks to Eric and Lissa for having me. :)

I'm dedicating this post to LAUREN: congrats on getting into the nursing program at Boise State! She (and my Dad:)) have spent countless nights doing quizzes on Blackboard. I lived with Lauren her freshman year of college, she has come a long way from napping through afternoon classes, playing guitar when she could have been studying (I had nothing to do with that), and staying up late to talk on the phone, remember how I was so mean to you about that? sorry. Lauren never misses class these days, she studies, she does elaborate work outs. Congrats to Lauren!!!

Laura made this delicious chocoflan pastel to accompany a delicious cream of broccoli soup (recommended to me by Sarah), we also dined on Ruth Wilson's rolls (even with some whole wheat flour, and 1% milk instead of whole, they were delish) and for health's sake, or as an excuse to eat nuts, cheese, and berries there was spinach salad, it was all sooo good. I wish every day was like this.

Dinner. Clay and I, sorry for the blur. Today: I met with my graduate committee and "defended" my thesis (means we sat in an office and talked about my exhibit for an hour). Then I spent the afternoon leisurly cooking with Emily M., Laura, and Chelsea. Emily did yoga postures while I formed rolls. She said the ujjayi breathing was most delicious when done in a kitchen with bread baking in the oven. The friends came, the food was consumed, guitars were played and songs sung, followed by games and communal dish washing. I feel so content. Partly because of the delicious food, but mostly because of the way good relationships with people are "nutrients to the soul. " You could say "chicken soup for the soul" if you really wanted to be gaggy.

Here is where I insert a snazzy quote about how love is the staff of life (when you thought it was bread). I keep thinking about the counselor I saw last year, we were talking about binge eating, and he told me to include a friend in that activity - not to drag them down with me, but to have a conversation with them, talk about how our days went, to show that we care about each other, he said it would help satisfy my need for food AND the more important need to feel loved. It seems about right. :)

I think the "Whit-dog" comes from Whitney's varsity basketball days, when she was always the smart, pretty, and athletic one in the family. She still is, only she has added volleyball, craftastic-ness, ability to find cool stuff in every junk pile, mother, chef, and pop star (see above photo) to her repertoire of talents. The guestbed in her house is always clean, the expensive and fragrant shampoos are in the shower, and the candy is in the cupboard next to the microwave.
Whitney has an eye for detail; she garnishes everything: Christmas hams, party tables, packages in the mail, hairbows. I love getting pom-poms, yarn bows, and tiny plastic figurines on all the presents she gives me.

Whit- Happy Birthday! Thanks for: letting me cry all the time, being the creative director and editor of my paper, lending me treasures for my art show, supporting me in all my endeavors, and for being such a sister-friend. Love you!
